Okay so my husband and I have been slightly obsessed with the show Storage Wars. If you’ve never seen the show, it is about a group of people who bet on abandoned storage units. They get into bidding wars and it gets pretty interesting. You then get to see if they find anything of value in the unit they won, and then see if said objects are worth any money. The show is quite entertaining simply because these guys are quite a cast of characters.
But it got me thinking. There are things, items, objects, that we no longer have and I wonder… would they be worth anything today?
When I was a small child, the movie E.T. was all the rage. (I am soooo dating myself here, but whatever). You could not get away from anything related to the film. Merchandising was out of control. Somehow I ended up with an E.T. doll and an E.T. TV tray.
Where are these items now? Who knows? Probably in some poor landfill somewhere. See, one day I had these items and then one day I didn’t. I believe they were thrown out during one of those super secret toy purges that parents do when their kid is otherwise occupied. (All the parents out there are nodding their head in vigorous agreement).
And to be fair, my E.T. doll had seen better days. He may have had some stuffing starting to show. But still! If I still had the doll, would it be worth anything? And my TV tray… could I have gotten something for that? I’ll never know…
Onto my husband… he was an avid collector of baseball cards. He had amassed quite a collection. Well, when he was a teenager he moved and they were boxed up. And the box was inadvertently tossed by someone, not him, into the trash. Ahhhhhh, the horror, I know! It still makes him mad to this day.
We both wonder, what would those cards have been worth today? Anything? A couple of dollars or hundreds of dollars? Sigh… another “what-if” with no answer.
Even though it’s interesting to wonder what these items would be worth if we still had them, the truth is we don’t have these items. It is what it is. In the meantime, we will continue to watch Storage Wars and live vicariously through them.
Have you ever tossed something out only to realize later it might have had value?
