The word “mom” is all-encompassing, right? So many titles bestowed on a word just three letters long. Comforter, nurturer, nourisher, healer… the list is a long one. But by being the wearer of so many hats, it’s easy to forget who the person is underneath the hats. The woman.
In the midst of caring for home and hearth, we women tend to get lost. We have a million things on our to-do list and none of them include taking care of ourselves. We sacrifice. We put our husbands, children, pets, and home before ourselves which sometimes can be to the detriment of our own health.
Now I am not saying that none of these things are important; they truly are. But what I am saying is that if Mom is not keeping herself healthy, then she cannot take care of what she values as important.
Life’s little inconsistencies have a tendency to get in the way of our best-laid plans, but moms need to feel the best they can. Taking time to care of you is not selfish; it is required. Eating right and exercise are important to your well-being, and so is mental health. Doing things for you is important.
Having times where you can mentally unwind, is one of the best things you can do to be a better mom. Sometimes you just need a break! I’m sure you’ve heard that saying “If mama ain’t happy, ain’t nobody happy”. It’s a pretty funny saying, but I think it has its merits.
Do something for you every once in a while: Read that book that has been on your reading list forever. Scrapbook those baby pictures that have been gathering dust. Go get a manicure, go for a run, go get some frozen yogurt…. with lotsa toppings! Just do something for you!
Rome wasn’t built in a day. Even just taking small steps can help you be a healthier person all around. Physical health and mental health are important; to take care of everyone else, you need to be healthy yourself!
A happy mom is a healthy mom
