I read this quote recently in a book on frugal living, and something about its simplicity resonated with me:
“If we are happy in our home, we have less need to leave it and spend money”.
I believe this to be true. If you aren’t happy with the way your home looks, you won’t want to spend any time there. If you don’t want to spend time in your own home, you are going to spend money to be somewhere… other than your own home.
Now this doesn’t mean one should go out to Pier One Imports or Cost Plus World Market and go on a furnishing frenzy. But you can liven up your space frugally to make it more homey, welcoming, and somewhere you want to spend your downtime.
Maybe you just need:
(*) to change your paint color. Sometimes all it takes is a new color on the walls to breathe some life back into a space. Not brave enough to paint your entire living room “Tangerine Dream” or “Fire Engine Red”? That’s what accent walls are for! One wall in a new color is enough to do the trick and infuse a new energy into your space.
(*) some fresh flowers. Fresh flowers are a nice touch to any room and are relatively inexpensive to acquire. And everyone has a cupboard somewhere with random vases that they are holding onto “just in case”. Well now’s the time. Dust that vase off and put some sunflowers in it! Instant and pretty decor.
(*) to rearrange your furniture. No money required! Give a new look to your space simply by moving some things around. You’d be surprised by how different the space looks and how much you like the change.
(*) redecorate with stuff you already own. I did this recently. I wanted more accents of blue in our living room. But instead of going out and purchasing a bunch of different accessory pieces, I pulled items from other rooms of my home and tried them out in our living room. Some I put back, some I kept. But it feels like I have new items in my living room, even though I really don’t. My space seems much brighter.
Are there any frugal things you do to “re-decorate” you home?
