I’m sure you’ve all heard me lament a time or two about the woefulness that is my grocery bill. I have tried and tried to reign that puppy in, but that bill will not be tamed.
I tried couponing, but that sort of blew up in my face. I tried shopping at different stores, trying to keep up with sale prices, but that just left me exhausted. And cranky.
Which was cured with a pint of ice cream 😉
And then I stumbled at some point, across meal planning. At about the same time I traded in my coupon binder, I upgraded to weekly handwritten lists of what we were going to eat that week. This helped lower my bill somewhat as I knew what we already had on hand and could purchase accordingly.
But then our grocery bill started going cuckoo again and has been for the past 6 months, and my futile attempts at lowering our bill, were leaving me quite frustrated. Why was our bill so out of control?
And then it hit me. It’s an idea that’s been done before, but would it work?
What if I did a monthly meal plan? Not weekly, so you are having to go to the store every week, but a menu written out for the entire month so I only had to go to the grocery store once?
Could it be done?
Now I realize, you can’t buy like 7 gallons of milk or 20 bananas and think “Okay, I don’t need to go back to the store till January”. But if I planned out the menu accordingly, we could do one big shopping trip at the beginning of the month, and only run to the store, if need be, for perishable items only.
So that’s what I did. It took awhile but I planned out our entire menu for the month of December. I based recipes on some items we already had, and menus that guaranteed some leftovers for the next night.
I went to the store, armed with my larger than normal shopping list, and purchased everything we need. The kitchen is stocked and the menu has been planned. With the exception of the need to purchase milk, we won’t have to go to the store for any food. Milk goes pretty fast in our house, and our refrigerator can only accommodate so many cartons. So milk will be an item that we will have to venture out for.
So that’s my grocery challenge. I’ve planned my menu and hopefully I can stay out of the grocery store (except for milk) for the rest of the month!
