So the other day, I was at the nail salon taking a much-needed “mommy break”, relishing in the fact that I wasn’t being subjected to yet another episode of Yo Gabba Gabba.
(All parents nod their head in agreement…)
In the midst of my zoning out, a woman behind me was getting her nails done and was talking quite loudly. You see, some women come in to get their nails done and the minute their tush is in the chair, start gabbing a mile a minute and don’t shut up until they are heading out the door.
This lady fell into that category.
Anyways, she was talking to the manicurist about how she is terrified of water. Not Psycho style, where she is afraid to get in the shower or something, but she is afraid of the ocean. She was telling the manicurist that she had only been to Hawaii once in her life (she is in her late 40’s) and she was completely freaked out on the airplane to and from, thinking the plane would malfunction and would hurtle them into the ocean.
She was saying that she cannot swim, has never learned, and refuses to even try to learn. The ocean is pretty to look at, but that’s where her fascination ends. She told the manicurist, with the exception of that ill-fated Hawaii trip, she only vacations on land, no water in sight.
I felt incredibly sad for this lady.
There are so many beautiful places in the world that she is never going to see, because of her fear. Breathtaking views and oceans so clear, you can see your feet.
She is letting her fear hold her back.
And that is why I felt bad for her; there’s so much beauty that she will never get to see, never get to enjoy.
It got me thinking…is there something holding me back from my dreams?
What about you? Are you letting your fear stop you from getting in the proverbial water? Are you inadvertently holding yourself back from something?
